Build and Defend Your Raft How to Build Your Raft
A square, barrel-floated deck with a table and a chest room beats a pretty pier every time.
Building is half the game’s name and most of the first hour. You cannot defend a pallet and you cannot raid from a pallet. Official images make the target obvious: start on four boards over barrel floats, finish on a two-story wooden box with a spiked skirt, plates, lamps, and a roof. This guide is the path between those pictures without wasting the wood you still do not have.
If you have not spawned yet, read Getting Started. If the table will not print walls, read Crafting Table. Layout ranks live on raft layouts.
Footprint first
Place floor until you have a square. A 3x3 is the minimum that lets you strafe. A 4x4 is the first comfortable fight space. Long skinny docks look like boats and play like hallways. Raiders walk them, defenders fall off them, and cannons cannot cover both long sides.
Keep the Crafting Table one tile in from the edge. If it sits on a lip, a boarder can break your upgrade path before they even see the chest.
Barrels and float
Both promo rafts sit on a ring of barrels or pontoons. Extra floor without extra float feels like a trampoline in a fight. When you add a tile, glance under the hull. If you see sky where a barrel should be, you overbuilt the deck. The raft priority tool lists float next to floor on purpose.
Walls are part of building
A deck with no walls is a stage. After the table unlocks perimeter pieces, wrap the square. One door. Chests in the core. Spikes on the outer ring come next — the cannon fortress in the art wears a spiked belt, not a picket fence with gaps. Details sit in how to defend and defenses. Do not skip here just because this page says “build.”
Going up
A second floor is A-tier, not S-tier. Put it on after the ground ring is closed. Ladders should not drop a guest onto the chest. Offset the hatch so a climber lands in a hallway you can shoot. Roof cannons look great in the thumbnail. They only work if someone is actually up there. Solo players should not live on the roof while the door is open.
Hour-100 rafts add lanterns, a palm, furniture, even a grill. That is cosmetics after power. If you still have a hole in the ring, the palm is a taunt.
What to build in order
- Extra floor to 3x3 or 4x4
- Crafting Table upgrade
- Chest in the center
- Four walls, one door
- Spikes / plates on the outer tiles
- Cannon corners
- Second floor and ladder offset
- Gather boom / harpoon mount
- Lights, flags, palms
That list matches the tier list and the loot checklist. If a code ever pays out, dump it into steps 2–5.
Building during a live raid
Do not place decorative tiles while someone is on your ladder. Every ghost preview is a second you are not swinging. Repair the hole, then the door, then the chest. Rebuild pretty after they leave. Crews should assign one builder so two people do not rotate the same wall — see solo versus crew.
Materials and the water
Wood and scrap come from the water and from other decks. In the build phase, harvest around your hull. A harpoon helps. Auto-harpoon scripts exist and are a ban risk; the fair method is still “look down, grab crate, place tile.” When the square is done, you can start raiding for extra stacks instead of circling the same waves.
Mistakes that look like skill
Mega decks. Huge footprints without plates are airports. Maze interiors. You will get lost in your own house during a board. Symmetry for screenshots. A pretty gap is a climb point. Copying hour 100 on hour 1. You do not have the table tier. Follow Getting Started instead.
Rebuild after Saturday patches if a piece vanished. Recipes move. The hull you loved on Friday might be illegal or weaker on Saturday, and the live table is canon over this page.
When the square feels boring, you did it right. Move to how to defend and then, only then, to how to raid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for raft builders and raiders.
What size should my first raft be?
A 3x3 or 4x4 square. Avoid long docks until you have plates and a closed chest room.
Should I build up or out?
Out to a square, then walls, then up. A second floor on an open pallet is a diving board.
Where do I put the Crafting Table?
One tile in from the edge, near the chest room, never on a lip raiders can break first.
